Sturgis: I Don't Think So

I've had several of you ask me if I'm going to Sturgis this year. I've been saying for months now that I'm going. I think I even told one person, "Come Hell or high water, I'll be there!" Well folks, the water has just overflowed the levee and drowned me. In other words, I'll not be going after all.

Some of you know that my wife was permanently laid off a few months ago after faithfully serving the same company for 13 years. It cuts our household income in half but I was still determined to get to Sturgis.

Until...
The owner of the company I work for called me in his office yesterday. He let me in on some confidential information that was not public yet. He told me that I might want to hang on to my pennies a little tighter because everyone in the company was probably going to get a 2-week "unpaid vacation" in July. So, the money will definitely not be available for me to go.

As sad as I am about this turn of events, I know that everything happens for a reason and I'm glad that some of you will be there. Be sure to take a lot of pictures for me!!

It just seems like there is allot of bad news occurring for allot of good people. I am hoping that the tide turns for all the good people to have some better news!

Really sorry to read this D-Day! Maybe the sky will open and money will rain down on you so you can go after all!

I hope things turn around for you and your wife very soon.

Times are tough. My people and I are missing out on a lot of events this summer too.

You all should save your money for the as yet un-named location for the biker blogfest.
We should start planning.

Sorry to hear you won't be making the trip. Seems lots and lots of good folks are having to adjust their plans as the reality of the current financial mess starts to really hit home.

Hang in there. Better days will be coming, and there's always next year.

That's a bummer, but I am a firm believer in 'everything happens for a reason'. Maybe this is a good thing in disguise.

I hope things work out.

That sucks, but kudos to the boss for the heads-up.

Big D’s got an idea there.

I hate to hear that! Nothing's more disappointing than broken plans.

Maybe something will change between now and then and you'll be to go. If not, I guess you'll be like the rest of us sad sacks and wait for our friends to share their candy.

Hope things look up for your wife soon. Hang in there.

Sorry to hear your news. At least your boss was decent enough to let you know before you started spending money. And knowing that everything happens for a reason can really help in a situation like this.
A blogger rally is definately in order!

Well my friend, you know I was looking forward to seeing you again, and being able to hang out for a good bit longer than we could in Milwaukee. I'm certainly no stranger to "lifus-interruptus," so I totally understand. I draw my strength from knowing there will always be other times and places for bikers to rally, and Big D's idea may end up being what does it for us all in the days ahead.

I'm amazed you have a boss decent enough to tip you off to the unpaid stretch - and I hope that's all it ends up being. I also hope your wife can find something else soon. Money issues really suck.

Steph, the others and I will make sure that Sturgis is well represented on the blogs when we get back. Good luck.

I've been wanting to pull off the trip to Sturgis longer than I've owned a bike. Not so much for the destination, but for the trip itself.

Maybe the stars will all align properly in the next few years, and we can hangout there.

I hope the financial/career aspect of life quickly and significantly improves for y'all soon.

-Peace

Welcome to my world! I'm broke as a joke. No Sturgis for me either. And I was originally planning on going too.

Dean...I am so very sad to read the bad news...but at least the Boss was up front with you...so you knew what to do and what not to do...I've got so many friends who are now unemployment statistics in OH, in WI, in WA, in CA and in FL...and we haven't seen the end of it yet...it's still gonna get worse...the 1930's are going to look good when this is over.
A very good friend and his wife got laid off the same day in OH from two different companies...one of them being Wall Mart...they've gone from a two income family to a no income family...I just can't believe what's going on but hey it was coming with all our manufacturing and infrastructure being transfered overseas...what did we expect...money printing...just won't happen...when a country gives up its manufacturing base and infrastructure...it is asking for trouble... The USA has got to bring its manufacturing base back home...that's the war we oughta try and win for everybody's sake...if you buy anything today or tomorrow...please buy American....if you don't somebody else is gonna lose his/her job.

Just wandered in here following links and wanted to say I'm sorry things have shifted so much to prevent your trip. As others have pointed out, it was really good of your boss to give you advance warning - so often these things just hit out of the blue for the front-line folks who aren't in on the discussions. Hope it turns around for you soon - I'm enjoying reading your blog!
