Today Harley-Davidson announced the release of a new motorcycle to their line: The Sportster Iron 883. In a news release Monday, the company said Sportsters have "stood against the grain" since they were introduced in 1957. The company's chief marketing officer, Mark-Hans Richer, described the bike as having old school style while leaving plenty of room for customization. And with the economy being what it is, a starting price tag of $7900.00 is a welcome relief.Although, already on the first day, I'm hearing some yawning coming from the biker community. If you remember the 1200 Nightster that the company released a year or two ago, this is pretty much the same bike except the Iron will be all blacked-out with the smaller 883 engine. So, it's the baby brother to the Nightster.
I realize during hard economic times that the company is retreating to its bread-and-butter line of bikes. The Sportster has endured for over 50 years and will probably last another 50. And I realize that they're trying to capture some of the younger market with the smaller price tag. But, can you really get excited about the same bike year after year? Is Willy G. finally out of ideas?

Since it is an established fact that most Sportster owners eventually trade-up to a Big Twin, myself included, I'd say that the gang in Milwaukee is on the right track here. There are still those out there who think Harley-Davidson is an exclusive club that most can't afford to join. I used to think that too - until I really started looking into all the bikes and all the prices. I started with a Sporty purely out of lack of funds to go bigger at the time.
Since times are tough, I'd say the Motor Company is VERY SMART in doing whatever they can to showcase and dress up their most affordable model. It makes good sense for today. As for tomorrow, well, let's just say that one thing leads to another...
Clearly they are marketing to a much younger crowd with this bike. I think it's a smart idea for all the reasons Joker stated. However, I didn't like the Nightster, and I don't like this one. It doesn't much matter, though, because I won't be buying a new Harley anytime soon! :)

I Guess that's why they make so many different bikes. We all have different tastes. I'd be willing to bet HD did their research on marketing before deploying production on this bike to see what the general riding public thought. I personally have always liked this particular look. It, just like choppers will never grow too old for my tastes.
I think the 883 motor is lacking, but it is a great entry point into the HD family. Guess that is why that is where I started, like many of you.
I hope this works for them. But if you think about it... young folks don't always use their best judgment, and you've got young riders out there able to afford these fast little Crotch Rockets that will do over 130 miles and hour. How are you going to entice them to buy a Harley (just for the namesake) that may go 90?
As far as the stock price goes? We keep watching it too, and may consider it if it drops a little more, but my gosh... they've been getting big, big bucks for their bikes for years, I'm hoping this brings them back into line a little bit with their competitors.
Come on Harley Davidson... Dig in and survive this mess!
I've had nearly all of them over the past 40 some years on bikes. I actually moved down to a Sporty a decade or so ago. I regretted it immediately. They are fine for in town riding from lounge to lounge, but for anything serious, you need a bigger bike.
I hope they survive the economic times. I know I ordered a part a few weeks back and I'm still waiting. The dealership said it was because they have cut back on staff and to be patient. Not one of my virtues.
I believe you really get what you pay for. With all my Harleys over the years I recognize that they make a quality product and they last.
