The Right To Bear Arms

A fellow motorcycle blogger at Keep The Rubber Side Down recently had a post titled Packing Heat discussing his right to "concealed carry" in his state of Ohio. I know this isn't motorcycle related but it's a topic I'm passionate about. So, here goes my rant.

What part of 'Shall Not Be Infringed' don't you understand? In their own words, the Framers saw the "right of the people to keep and bear arms" so important that they made it second in our Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment wasn't written into our Bill of Rights so that we could go duck or deer hunting. The Second Amendment was given to us as protection against tyranny by the federal government and the Congress of the United States. Our Framers new the truth. They had first hand knowledge of an oppressive government which is why they left England. Their quotes bear witness to these oppressions and serve as a warning to our country.

George Washington: "Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence."

Thomas Jefferson: "And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. ... The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Patrick Henry:"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined...The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun.

Samuel Adams:"The Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms."

George Mason:"To disarm the people (is) the best and most effectual way to enslave them."

Thomas Jefferson: "The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that... it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."

Alexander Hamilton: "The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."

Tench Coxe: "Whereas civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize ... the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms."

Thomas Jefferson: "One loves to possess arms, though they hope never to have occasion for them."

Thomas Jefferson:"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

"Oh, you're just being paranoid. That could never happen in America.", I've been told. I'm sure that's what the people of the Soviet Union, Germany, Uganda and many other nations were told just before their gun rights were taken away only to have millions killed shortly after. Known defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million. Just look at how many of our freedoms and rights have eroded over the past handful of years. Then ask yourself just how far away are we from where these other nations were at.

I'm right there with you on the 2nd amendment. I have been a member of the NRA in the past. I have owned several guns in the past.

I also believe that our federal government is scary. They have too much power, and there's too much secrecy. Why are they keeping secrets from us...the people who pay them?

I could rant all day, but I won't. I'll just say, Amen, Brother.

Ride safe.

I also am with you on this issue 100%. If only the Framers could have known how much trouble that line about a "well-regulated Militia" in the text of the amendment would eventually cause gun owners. To me it's common sense that at the time the 2nd Amendment was written this referred to the local men taking their rifles down from over the fireplace and assembling in the Town Square to meet whatever threatened them. Now, it's been twisted by a bunch of leftist freaks to mean that the right to keep and bear arms applies only to the military.

Fortunately, on June 26, 2008, the SCOTUS ruled in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller that The Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. This case law represents a major ruling in FAVOR of gun owners, and will make it easier for violations of OUR RIGHTS by State and Local authorities to be ruled illegal in future litigation.

In simpler language, we now have a Supreme Court decision backing us. As long as that stands, I'm not worried about losing my ability to carry concealed. I believe that now, anywhere in the United States, should a qualified applicant be denied his or her right to carry, that they would prevail by filing suit.

It is my hope that one day this matter will be removed from the interference of State and Local governments. I believe we have the right to be issued a FEDERAL PERMIT, much like a Passport, allowing us to carry concealed WITHOUT RESTRICTION, in any of the 50 United States. I don't think I'll be lucky enough to live to see this, but I can only hope.

For now at least, we can take comfort in the knowledge that we can sue the pointed-head asshole at the local police station when he tries to enforce his personal gun laws on us. We can sue, and we can win, and THEY KNOW IT.

Be well armed. When the shit hits the fan, it's the only way to protect you and your family. If you think the local cops or the government will save your ass, I have two words for you: Hurricane Katrina.

You are so right. All of you. My family has had someone serve in as far as we know every conflict and war this country has ever had. Ann it is very important to belong and have the NRA. I'd like to think I am ready to defend all of our amendments. As I believe my sons are too. Mentally, in body and in arms. God Bless those men and women that defend just that.

Ann-
Sometimes the word "scary" is an understatement. You can rant on my dime anytime.

Joker-
Why do you always hold back? Tell us how you really feel.

Webster-
Right on. God bless the men and women who protect our rights.

Allen-
Looks like you've been digging in my contemplative quote file. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Willy D-
You crack me up man!

Dean,

Wood Gun, er, I meant Good One!

I'll second that Amen!
I agree with Allen Madding's comment.

Although I don't conceal and carry, or am not a member of the NRA, I hold no oppositions. It is our right to protect ourselves. No one should ever attempt to take that right away. If they do, they THEY should be shot!

I totally agree with you guys. And some of the people who oppose the right to bear arms should see how they feel if something happens to their family and they are unable to protect themselves.

only 2 things harm a gun; rust and politicians. Lock and load!

Now this was a post worth reading. Those who try to talk people into giving up their arms because they're against it are the ones to keep a vewy, vewy close eye on.
